ЁЯМ┐ What is Vetiver Farming?

Vetiver is a perennial aromatic grass native to India. It is mainly cultivated for its high-value essential oil extracted from its roots. This oil is widely used in perfumes, skincare, soaps, and Ayurvedic formulations. Moreover, Vetiver roots are known for their soil-binding properties, making them perfect for eco-restoration projects in coastal and hilly regions like Konkan.

ЁЯМ▒ Climate and Soil Requirements

Vetiver thrives in tropical climates with moderate rainfall. The red lateritic soil of Konkan is ideal for Vetiver cultivation. The plant tolerates drought and waterlogging, making it perfect for marginal lands. It can grow in soils with pH 4.5тАУ10, showcasing its remarkable adaptability.

Recommended Climate:

  • Temperature: 25┬░C to 35┬░C
  • Rainfall: 800тАУ2000 mm annually
  • Soil: Well-drained loamy or lateritic soil

ЁЯЪЬ Land Preparation and Planting

For Vetiver cultivation in Konkan, prepare the land by deep plowing followed by harrowing. Organic manure or compost (5тАУ10 tons/acre) is applied to enhance soil fertility. Slips (rooted tillers) are planted at 60 cm ├Ч 60 cm spacing at the onset of the monsoon.

Fertilization:

  • Farmyard manure: 10 tons/acre
  • Nitrogen: 40 kg/acre
  • Phosphorus: 20 kg/acre
  • Potassium: 20 kg/acre

ЁЯТз Irrigation and Weed Management

Vetiver requires minimal irrigation after establishment. During dry periods, watering once in 15тАУ20 days is sufficient. Weed control during the first three months is crucial to ensure proper root establishment.

ЁЯМ╛ Harvesting and Yield

The harvest period starts 12тАУ15 months after planting. Roots are carefully dug, cleaned, and dried in shade. On average, one acre of Vetiver yields around 1,500тАУ2,000 kg of roots, producing approximately 10тАУ12 kg of Vetiver essential oil.
